During our time in Ghana around 80 women underwent surgery to repair vesico-vaginal fistulas. This complication of child birth is caused by prolonged and obstructed delivery causing a hole in the bladder and constant leakage of urine. These women are often rejected by their husbands, families and whole communities.
After surgery and confirmation that a woman is now "dry" she is presented with a new dress signifying a new start, a new life. She is transformed and restored often to her husband and family and community. This picture shows some of the ladies during the "dress ceremony" on board the Anastasis, taken in the ward.
